I have a 1987 Evinrude 70 HP Ouboard with powertilt and electric start.

I woudl like to attach a tachometer - I was told that the wiring harness to the shifter may already carry the tach signals. Can this be? Where can I get a wiring diagram?

If you have the small black plug on the side of your control(And you probably do), it is very simple to add a Tach. You simply plug in the harness to the plug and run it to the console and wire up the Tach. Purple to ignition terminal, Black to ground, Gray wire to Send and hook up the backlight by tagging into another instrument lighting terminal. All this is done at the tach, of course. You may look under your console and see if there is a gray wire already present. If so, you will not need the harness. Just hook up as above and use the gray wire. And yes, if you want to get a Manual, get it for the motor.

Good site for Tach info in Adobe:

web page

Factory Manual(Best you can get)

Manual

Well Rick that certainly was a wealth of valuable information! A couple of things though.
-The link to the wiring harness you provide states that it is discontinued. Any idea where I can get it?

-I seem to see that 3-pin plug (half-moon) and there is a connector to it with only 1 wire (only 1 pin others not there) - a purple one. What would this wire be for?

The half-moon connector is the one your after. The purple wire provides 12 volts when the key is turned. Someone must have used it to power something else(Common). You just need to find out what, by tracing it down. When I posted that link for the harness, it was still available for the OMC, but not the Merc. Must have made a decision to stop selling both. I would find out where that purple wire goes to and then we will see if it can be rearranged to power whatever it is some other way, so you can get a harness to plug in there. I'll look around and see if I can find another. In the meanwhile, did you look for the gray wire under the console? Usually when someone pulls power from the plug, it's for a Gauge on the dash. Check it out. You can also get the harness at Cabela's. Just go to there site and type in "tachometer wiring" in the keyword search box at the top left. When the teleflex Tachs come up, click on them and scroll down to the harness.

Cabelas

Also, there's one on E-Bay for sale:

E-Bay Harness

Looks like this:
