I have a 1984 115hp I-6 Mercury. I've been reading about tack problems on here and I have one that seems silumar to others issues. Sometimes it doesn't work and jumps all around and other times it's fine.(more bad than good) I haven't looked for loose wires yet but was wondering if my Rectifier is bad, can this hurt any electrical parts in my engine if it's bad and I run her?

How do I test my Rectifire and where is it located in this engine? Thank you.

Re: Tack/rectifier Question

Looking quickly at the parts list at www.crowleymarine.com I see that you have a basic rectifier without a regulator. There should be two yellow wires comming from the stator and one red wire going to battery +. Your tach signal should be a gray wire connected on the same terminal as one of the yellow wires. The rectifier should be located adjacent to the starter solenoid which is just above the switchbox on the electrical board on the stbd side of the engine.

If you look closely you'll see it here just to the left of the solenoid and above the switchbox(s). Your's should be in the same general area.

That said, Laddies just posted the test procedures for testing this rectifier in another tach thread. It's recent so you should be able to find it pretty quickly.
