Is it just me guys or does this bother anyone else. How many times I have seen some outstanding advice given to another member with a problem and the member with the problem RARELY posts back any results or even answers a question asked referring to the problem. In my opinion ,part of what this forum is all about besides giving advice and helping fellow members out of a jam is finding out which advice was the correct advice to solve the problem.Charlie

Right on, Charlie.

Helpers want to know if their diagnosis/advice worked or not. That is one way they learn and get better.

Posters really do owe feedback to those who helped, or tried to help.

The payback for the guys who come on here and offer to help fellow boaters is knowing they have helped.

That feedback is too often denied. :(

Right cc. I make it a point to post feedback on any questions I ask or the advice given to me by other members. It's just good ole common courtesy. I follow any thread I start till it just fades away... When someone follows up to a problem, it helps us all.

cc - There was a poster yesterday that fit your description to a "T". He had two posts going on the J/E troubles section and another in "another" section all dealing with the same problem. He paid no attention to the suggestions given and kept asking questions that made no sense at all. It seemed to me that he was determined to throw parts at his motor but was not interested in troubleshooting at all.

I contrast that one with a a guy a couple of days ago who clearly posted the symptoms of his problem and caught the attention of several of our "senior" guys. The thread must have gone through 20 posts back and forth until the problem was resolved. A real learning experience.

Another that rings my chimes is the guy who wants detail instructions/diagrams on how to do something and will not pick-up a manusl or read one in the library.

Another is the guy who has a $10,000.00 motor and wants to save $2.00 on a gallon of oil.

Another is the endless posts on smart tabs or Bayliner bashing or 2 cycle vs 4 cycle or - - - - - - - .

In spite of these irritations I enjoy helping where I can.

We all must also consider and keep in mind the fact that some people just do not feel comfortable posting on the Internet for one reason or another. It's the same thing as some people not feeling comfortable being around crowds or talking to other people they don't know. The anonymity of the net does not necessarily take away the fact that there are hundreds of people reading their posts.

Granted there are those that are just plane rude about it and do not care. That's their problem not ours.

It's nothing more than a lack of learned civility that is way to prevalant today.. I would see the same thing when my kids would bring a friend home for lunch. The majority of them would eat then leave without as much as a thank you.

Another possibility is that the original poster is as computer illiterate as I am. I have a posted question on the forum with no answers(it is an obscure question) and I haven't figured out if there are no answers or I just can't find them.

Sure Elk, but they're comfortable enough to post ASKING FOR HELP. My guess is that many are, s you say, rude & uncaring. But others may be just plain ignorant about the benefit they in turn can provide by letting others know how things turned out and exactly what helped and what didn't in that particular situation.

This is one of the few forums I've seen that doesn't have a link (that I could easily find, anyway) giving guidance for people posting new topics. I love the forum and in general it appears to work very well, so something like that probably wouldn't be worth the time and effort to add.

But if it ever is, perhaps it could contain a line explaining the benefits of a poster providing feedback as to the advice recieved. As well as the principle of common courtesy in acknowlegding and showing appreciation to those responders who have taken the time & effort to try to help!

Everybody,
I am new to this sight and the advice and information is great. It took me a sec. to reply just becuse I am busy but not rude. I figure if you take the time to answer a question the other person can take the time to say thanks.

James

Bass Man Bruce: There may be several reasons why you get no response. Usually, in my case anyway, it's because I'm not sure of the answer. I figure you're doing the questioner a dis-service if you're just guessing and I think most of the guys feel the same way. The only excepion would be if it's a very strange situation and guesses are invited.
I would like to see responses on how the problem turned out too. I still remember the guy in Texas who had a motor that wouldn't run in salt water, but ran fine in fresh water. We all did a lot of guessing on that one but never heard from the guy again. I'd still like to know what the right guess for that one was. Of course, I think it was mine.

Kind of sad that you need to teach manners to adults. Sign of the times I guess....

Maybe it is just that the issue is not done.
I posted a question on transducer compatibility, but I have not yet resolved the situation.

When I have, I'll post the results.

I always reply back with a gratitude of thanks, even though I might be a day late. If someone takes the time to answer my question then I'll certaintly take the time to answer back. I've said it once and I'llsay it again this is a great forum.

I see new posters looking for help and wish I could post some perfect on the spot answer. However, usually I just keep reading because I would rather not comment or guess when someone probably knows the answer and will eventually post it. If they get no answer, sometimes they get disappointed but we all have different schedules and will eventually cruise by their posts.

Unfortunately, many new posters check back and find no instant answer and never come back to the board again. No system is perfect but the amount of information on this board is really incredible.

I like posting without worrying about getting flamed and the nicer people are to each other, the more people will join in.

Trust me, when my engine provides me with a "situation" I will put it right here in black and white and if the solution comes back to me through this board... it will get posted right away. Success is always a winner in my book.

Controlled Rage against the machine will continue here if we all work to together. :p

Re: take iboat advice and no post back????Why

I guess what gets me and is close to what SoLittle said is that so many times the same question is asked over and over and over. I have not needed to ask many questions about my 1971 Merc 650 because there is already so much information on that motor here on this board. I personally would much rather do some research on whatever problem I am having and get a LOT of information on the subject from posts that have been made in the last couple of years, than I would just start another new post and get maybe 20 or 30 answers(that was a long run on sentence). I am not sure why so many people need to ask the same question that has been answered hundreds of times already, but if I were the one answering these problems I would get tired of repeating myself on an almost daily basis. I hope this doesn't sound to critical, but I think it kinda goes along with the original post.

And I also, since I use the search feature, really appreciate when the starter of a thread comes back and tells us what the problem was and gives as much detail as possible. When I use the search feature and find the answer I need I do not respond since I did not start the thread and since I don't want to bring an old thread back to life.

So I agree entirely and NEED the return feedback from the thread originator!
