It's a good day,won new 13.25 x 17 prop on ebay, $95 to the door! The setup that came on the boat was a 1983 90 hp johnson with 12.75 x 21 prop. It also has one of those hydrofoil things attached on the lower end. So what will be the pros or cons of leaving the FIN on with the new prop? Thanks!!

Some will say take it off. Others will say leave it on. There are better ways to do what a hydrofoil does but to satisfy your curiosity, run it with it on. then take it off and run it again under the same conditions of load and speed. If there is no difference you have your answer. I've used them in the past and always end up taking them off. My current boat has Nauticus Smart Tabs and I couldn't be happier.

Wow...he's dropping four inches from what he currently has. Isn't RPM's going to be an issue?

If the existing prop allows the engine to rev in it's maximum recommended wide open throttle rpm band, you bet this will be a problem. The engine will likely be about 800 rpm over red-line. If the engine is currently over-propped (not able to reach its recommended WOT rpm, then it will raise rpm but how much we can't tell since we don't know what the current rpm is.

Re: Take it off, or leave it on?

Current setup has me turning 5000 wot. I had previsouly posted that number to be 4500, but spoke with previous owner and he said i must have been doing something wrong because someone had told him not to run over 5000 rpm and thats how he set it up. The boat is a 16 ft Hydra-sport X-260, nada book says it weighs appox 800 lbs. 1983 90hp johnson weighs about 300lbs, so 1100lbs plus 2 200 lbs people and a few fishing rods. Hope to be very close to max rpm,s ,will hydrofoil help or hinder? Also can i use the trim to adjust max rpm or just ease back on throttle if it turns a little high?

Re: Take it off, or leave it on?

Not running over 5000 RPM says the boat is already close prop-wise. Get this boat on the water and open it up, trim it out, to see what it does. The purpose of trim is to allow MAXIMUM performance from the boat, not to slow it down. You control engine rpm with the throttle. But it makes no sense to put a prop on the boat that purposely allows the engine to over rev and then have to slow it down with the throttle. The idea is, as I said, to install a prop that allows the engine to rev in the recommended RPM band which for that engine is 4500 - 5500 RPM. So you see -- if you have to hold it back so as not to exceep 5000 RPM, it will very likely run at 5500 if you turn it loose which is what it is supposed to do. Now if you install that 17P prop, you add another 800 RPM which puts you at 6400 RPM. Does the word KABOOM have any meaning for you? If you really can't get over 5000 at WOT then a four inch change of pitch would put you at 5800. But make sure the engine is properly tuned, setup is correct, and you are properly trimmed when making the test runs. Then change props to bring the revs up if necessary.

Re: Take it off, or leave it on?

Before i ordered new prop i asked for wot info on johnson engine forum. I was told 5800 was the number to shoot for with todays fuel. Did some searches that lead me to belive that 2 strokes like the high end of the rpm range. Guess its time to test all these theroy's out for myself. thanks for all help and i will let you know how things turned out, soon i hope with a little help from the weather! As far as previous owner 5000 was or is still wot with 12.75 x 21p Will Run with current setup, see for myself, then change prop and do it again. Sounds like a fun day on the water just playing!!!!!
