I have a 92 force 40 hp. Im tring to relocate my steering cable back by the transome but the spot is too tight to fit the foot and a half steering rod through.
my question is can I take the big nut off on the gear box side and slide the cable out? if so that would do the trick.

Re: taking apart a steering cable

If you have a rotary helm, yes, you can do it. But, you need to be careful when you re-install it so that the steering is centered. Also, some rotary helms have travel stops. if this is the case, you will need to disassemble the helm to get out the cable. Not a big job though.

If you have rack and pinion, Some do not come apart at the rack and those that do also have a rigid foot or two inside the rack so it would not be any help to disconnect at the rack.

thank you so much, it worked just like you said. I took the nut loose and turned the steering wheel until the cable came out. then it wound back up like it was supose to.
