I am putting my boat (72 grady white / 78 Johnson 140) in the sound next week for the first time. I have been running it in the local lakes for a couple of years with no problems. My question is what extra steps should I take for safety and what is the best way to clean it out afterwards? It will be in the water for about a week. I know I need to flush the motor, do I just use a muffs and a hose? Any other suggestions.

just give it a good wash afterwards. After each salt water expedition, we always stop at the car wash and go at it with the power washer. This stops the corrosion (well, most anyway) on bow rails, etc etc. I would run the motor for at least 15 minutes on the muffs as well..

its also nice to get home and unhook the trailer and be done with it all.

I keep my '93 Grady in saltwater from April through Nov. They're made great. Nothing rusts. Just wash it down to keep it clean. It's the rods, hooks and lures you have to worry about! Be careful about the rules of the lakes after its been in the saltwater.

Muffs are the suction cups that you hook a hose to to run water into the intake on the lower unit that allows you to start it outside of the water..flush it, etc. You can get them at any boat store, even Walmart.

tbarr,
Muffs is a devise used for providing water the water intake holes of a lower unit. A garden hose should be attached to Muffs and a water should be running before you start your engine.
from what i read, your boat will be in the water for a week. no problem there, enjoy it. i'd wash it down after each trip. can't really use muffs as you don't want to run the engine when it's trimmed high and out of the water. your engine should have a hose connection up top to connect to. you can run fresh water to it, but you don't run the engine. just cleans out the salt. good luck-
