I have a 1960's 15' starcraft jet. I live in Indiana and been thinking of taking it on vacation with me down to the tampa bay area. What do you guys think. It would be my wife, 2 small kids, and me. If I keep it in the bay can a boat that size handle it, or do you think it would be more of a problem than its worth? Not sure of how big the waves are down there. Thanks for your input.

If it is a small jet - have you got a stainless impeller, and does the boat require any other equipment for salt water?

Its a aluminum prop.. I dont know if it requires any other equipment for saltwater. I would think just for one or two times in the bay it wouldnt matter. Along as I flushed the motor and washed the boat later?

Tampa bay boating is not for the faint of heart. They have massive thunder storms in the summer, and they happen most every day....no kidding. Besides that, red tide, salt water, dead snakes, etc, etc.

I love to visit there, but i won't boat there. The Great lakes have us spoiled.

Just my opinion.

Your boat will be fine in the Bay. One of my boats is a similar size, and I have no problems in the Bay. I am seldom on the Bay, because I prefer the ICW and the Gulf.

However, if you are only going to use it once or twice, I would forego the hassle and just rent a boat here.

My folks live in Safety Harbor, which is in the Tampa/Clearwater area and I live in Ohio. Me and my brother always just rent a boat, or take a charter, when we go to visit. It would be a heck of a tow from Indiana or Ohio. You'll spend a bunch of $$$ just in the gas. I can't remember what we paid last year, but it didn't seem that crazy priced, and we rented a great 20' newer deck boat. We had a blast. The bay area/Clearwater area takes some getting used to because of the channels, and fear of shallow waters and sand-bars, but still a lot of fun. Just my .02...
I hope you and your family have a great vacation.

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

Last time I was down my family rented a 15' Boston whaler knock off for something like $120. This was the half day rate, we were out from 1-6pm and we were on vacation and did not feel like being up at 8 to rent a boat.

We did not have to do anything but show up at the dock and off we went, they even paid for the gas. It was really nice.

thats a long drive to bring your little boat to the bay...

renting a boat would probably cost what you would save on gas and freeway hassle...

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

This is great info. I'm going to look online and see about how much boat rentals cost. There is something cool about taking your own boat but if the rental cost are reasonable it would be worth it. I wouldnt have to worry about towing it that far or something going wrong with my old boat that would ruin the trip. Thanks guys.

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

I live here in Tampa Bay and think that you would do ok on the water with your boat with a little due diligence. We have tides, currents and lots & lots of them buoy things.

I too feel that one of the cool things about owning your own boat is getting to use it in different places and the freedom to just pick up and go.

If you are going to dock it, I would double-check your bilge pump and batteries.

If you have a place to dock it, where are you going to park it? Not a hotel parking lot. Not for long anyway. There are some storage lots down here that you could park it in. But neither option is going to supply you with a wash down.

If you have a good trailer & a reliable boat and some place safe to put it when you go visit Mickey, then go for it.

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

I grew up on the Southern side of Tampa Bay (Anna Maria Island) and a 15' boat will be fine on most days. Being a boater you know to use good judgement. I will say the open waters of Tampa Bay is no place for a small boat when the wind blows. The chop on the bay is often far worse than it is in the Gulf. I have seen days when we opted to go out in the Gulf because the bay was just too rough, it all depends on the wind and wind direction.

A couple of things to watch for that have not been brought up by others. Even in a small boat stay in the channels, due to the tides there are a lot of shoals and shallow flats that can stop your boat like a brick wall. Also if you are going to dock your boat and leave it in the water for a week you will spend the next few days when you get home scraping barnicles. It only takes about a week for them to start growing on your hull. After a week they won't be much larger than grains of sand but you will not like what you see.

Enough of the negatives, you'll have a great time. Just on the south side of the bay there are so many different bodies of water. Within 10 minutes of each other you have Tampa Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, Terra Ciea Bay, The Manatee river, Sarasota Bay, Palma Sola Bay and many others. The fishing is awesome, snook, trout, redfish, sharks and tarpon are probably the most common species targeted. Just be aware of the regulations, especially on snook and redfish. The regulations change from season to season, even the locals are sometimes confused over what is a legal fish. If you have time you will want to take a day trip out to Egmont Key. There is a bunch of old forts and military bunkers out there from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The gulf has swallowed up a lot of it but it is still a pretty neat place.

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

I lived in Indiana for 45 years. I have lived in Florida for 3 years.
I dont know your boating experience but an Indiana storm is nothing compared to a Florida storm on Tampa bay. The amount of rain that comes down is unbelievable and frighting in a boat. They come on you really fast especially if you are not experienced in watching for them. June thru sept marks our stormy season.
900 miles to tow a boat for a few times out is not worth the trouble. Especially if you have never boated in a Florida rain storm. Tampa Bay has some wicked storms roll thru it. As does the Gulf. You then realize how big water really is when swells are bigger than your boat when 10 minutes prior you were jamin to the radio and laffing with your family and now you are siezed with fear.
Not trying to scare you , I just want to keep it real.

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

Don't let em scare you, yes you need to keep an eye out for the weather just like anywere else. The key to summer boating in Florida is get up early and be off the water by mid afternoon. Be aware that storms do build faster here than in most places but it is not like they come at you out of nowhere. If you are in a 15 ft boat you just want to head for cover at the first sign of a storm I don't think it is any different anywhere else. October is well after the rainy season and is historicaly one of the dryest months we have.

Re: Taking my boat on vacation?

Well, I did it. I took my boat 999 miles to the Bay and loved it. I drove through the night so traffic wasnt bad and since its such a light boat, gas wasnt bad either. We went to Shell island, even made it to Egmont Key. The family loved it and saw tons of wild life. You guys werent kidding about the shallow areas of Tampa bay. Even after looking at charts and maps, its hard to believe you can be so from from shore and just be in a foot of water. I only got to fish a little but next time I'm going to do much more of that. Thanks for the input everyone. Rock on and Boat on my friends!

Good for you, glad you had a great time in our waters. :)
Sounds like you just used some common sense and research.
Egmont Key is great.
