I have a 1996 four winds with a volvo penta motor and cobra sx outdrive which I have owned for three years. I do know my way around the motor(replaced it with a crate motor when I purchased the boat) but don't know much about the outdrive other than replacing the gimble bearing. Thats problem #1. Problem #2, and I know it's bad, is I hit a log(while on plane) that I obviously didn't see in the river where we boat. I wasn't even sure where it hit. I was hoping the hull and not the lower unit but wasn't sure. We were next to the boat launch and were getting ready to load so we took the boat out. I noticed a vibration and assumed the aluminum(not stainless) prop would be done. When we pulled the boat out there was no visible damage to the lower unit at all. When we got home I pulled the engine cover to find about 75 gallons of water whick I am hoping was some part of the sloppy trailer loading. After a ton of examination I found out it was not the hull. I resank the boat(on the trailer) the next day and I could hear the water leaking in the back transom. Other than the fact that I am pretty sure that the lower unit will grenade in the next month or two any help on where to begin with the water would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Taking on water thru transom

Time to pull the drive and inspect the bell housing and the transom for damage. If you hit a log at speed and it hit the drive the majority of the force will be placed on the meeting point of the drive and transom. There is a good possiblity that the bell house, transom or both will need major fixing.

This topic would be better handled in the resto forum.
Good luck

On most outdrives, there is a rubber boot on the shift lever. My boot deteriorated over time but hitting something would also do it, and it will leak a lot of water.
