taking slack out of throttle control cable

hi guys, I posted something like this elsewhere and would like some input here... I have a commander 4000 with a merc 165 with an alpha 1 and all of the sudden I have lots of slack in the control...so much that I can't get the engine back to idle without smacking the carb throttle arm with my hand. Makes no sense since last year it sprung right back.

My question is... I know you can take out some of the slack at the carb via the barrel anchor.... but can you do the same at the control end? I know I may need a new cable but am against a time crunch and need a temporary fix until I can get a new one installed. Looking at the manual, it seems that there is a barrel on the control end ...somewhat like the carb end. Can we tweak it to make it a tighter cable?

thanks, john

I just replaced the throttle and shift cables on my Mercruiser control. Its a Commander 3000, so its the older version of the cables. There are no adjustments at the control end. The barrel position is fixed. Adjustments are only made on the engine side.
