most due take in water thru the water inlet system but if you mean leaking in the bilge:
corroded transom
corroded exaust pipe
torn bellows
torn shift cable boot
loose tansom/rotted transom

Re: taking water through outdrive

when i got my old boat. while i wasn't taking on water, i did have water intrusion into the bellows. rusty drive shaft parts were the clue. bellow and shift cable replacement would be the norm i'd think. tilt the drive up and look close at these bellows. ya might be able to see the defect from the outside. if it's bellows.

while i don't know if it makes any difference. aristocrafts don't have much wood in their transoms. if any. i've had conflicting info as to this as to weather it's wood or something else. if there is wood, it's only around the drive. so if it is wood rot. there wouldn't be much wood to replace.

the red line is the outline of where the wood may be. it'd be right where the gimble housing bolts onto.
