It's sitting on a stand in my driveway and i'm not sure whether to send it for recycling or try to restore it.
What's common knowledge out there?
I had it running several years ago but had no boat to put it on.
It needs new electrical cables but seems like it might be a good motor for somebody.

Is that the three cylinder. There are some guys that would definitely salivate over that one even with the electric shift.

Do a search here in the forum on electric shift if you want info about how it works.

Thanks for the search tip, that was useful. I'm pretty sure it's a 4 banger
Made a lot of noise when I started it momentarily without the lower unit attached.
I read in line about some guys are useing these things as dragster engines.

There was a 75hp electric shift made in 1965, but not one in '75. What is the model number?

the model / serial # is 75393E E03864
I spoke a little bit with Wilbur Goltz of the texas chapter of the antique outboard motor club and he thought it might be a 63 model. Does this sound right?

Re: Talk to me about the 1975, 75 hp Johnson electric shift

actually, I just found this on another boat list.. looks like you friend is right..

---------------------------------------------
I have a new (TO ME) 75hp Evenrude motor. somewhere between
68 and 78.(BEST GUESS) model#75393E.
With some work I can get it
to start, but will not stay running. The compression is 55 on
3 cylinders and 53 on the 4th. I know the carbs need work, which is in
progress. But I have no idea what the settings are. It is electric shift.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Russell N

--------------------------------------------
Your motor is a 1963 model and your compression guage must be wrong. That motor should have about 125 lbs on each cylinder. I don't think there is any way it would even fire with 55 lbs. It could be the rings are stuck if it has been setting for a long time. I wouldn't waste too much time repairing anything else on the motor until I verified that it had good compression. If those readings are correct the motor may require repairs far beyond it's worth, unless it had head gaskets bad. Good luck!
------------------------------------------

Russell,

Hope that helps you...

regards

Frank
