Taming my i6 charge voltage

Hi guys!

I need to get my charge voltage down on my 1970 1150 inline 6. At WOT I'm still only getting 4800rpm, but I'm blowing everything up! Toll now stands at 1x fuel pump and 2x rev counters. Hits just over 18V at WOT.

Is there any regulator I can use aside from the motor cycle ones (Expensive)?

I tried using an automotive one, but they are for alternators and have a leg that has to be connected to a brush that is in turn connected to the battery aswell. So it doesn't work on my magneto type system. Any suggestions?

Mercury and Rapair both build reg that will work on that engine, usally voltage that high is caused by a bad connection or a battery with little capacity, ck connections and try jumpering another battery to the system. Are you running a electric fuel pump? That could be the problem with low RPM, most electric pumps develope to many PSI. and cause the engines to run rich

Thanks laddies! Will have a look at jumpering another battery into the system.

Yes I'm running a electric fuel pump. But not the high pressure (gear pumps) type that most people use. It's a low pressure diaphram pump (0.2 bar). Exactly the same as the merc pump. Has a solenoid that moves the diaphram to suck fuel into the pump, and a low pressure spring return, that pumps the fuel to my fuel pumps. I did verify that my float levels remain the same when fully pumped by the pump. The drop to my fuel tank is just a bit too much for the engine fuel pumps to suck up and I end up running too lean.

I leave the lights on and the radio turned up, takes care of the excess.

-W

Thanx a mil for the advice!

Bought a second battery, and all is well! Didn't even see 14V where I used to get 17V! The batteries are now wired in parallel, one on each side of the boat.
