First time poster here, just tried searching for what I am looking for with no avail. Anyways, I am about to order a petcock assembly from Tanaka (part# 59210201900, new part #6691655), but was wondering if there are any other substitutes that I may be able to pick up in a local shop.

I damaged the soft inner sleeve where the knob goes into by soaking it in carb cleaner overnight. It softened and swelled up the material inside, and it cracked.

here's a picture of the part on another website:

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've been screwing around with that petcock on my Tanaka for 25+ years and this year I just went to Northern tool in the chain saw area and got a real nice all-plastic replacement with some clear yellow fuel line and installed it on my motor, used a tie-wrap to sorta hold it in place. No more crummy petcock problems! That little piece of soft rubber in there was always a bad design in my opinion. Good Luck!

that's some of the best news I've had in my Tanaka resurrection. This is my first time working on a small engine, so forgive my ignorance on the next question. What is the purpose of a petcock anyways? All of the info I could find online related to motorcycle petcocks and fuel reserves.

The petcock is so you can turn your gas off when not using the motor or during storage, otherwise the gas can leak right past your carb float valve and flood your motor with fuel, which is unsafe and will make it hard to start. Also remember to close your fuel tank vent screw to prevent leakage.
