So i'm in the process of replacing the transom and core on my runabout, so that mean poly resin. I got a quote for US composites and shipping to Cal was just to much. HD has 3M poly for $37 a gallon. Then I looked at TAP, they have a store in my city. They has two types. One they call "structural lay-up" ($50 a gal) the other is "Laminating" ($30 a gal.) from the descriptions it sounds like the difference is the laminating one doesn't have wax? What do u guys think? will the laminating resin work for me?

I use epoxy now for everything, but when I was using resin I used the non waxed stuff. I didn't have to scuff it up as much to add a second coat...

Re: TAP Resin Types

You'll need to ask them the difference between the two, the reason is those terms actually mean nothing, they're only vague terms used in the retail resin market, not terms used in the actual industry. Companies use descriptions like that thinking it will make it easier to know what to buy, but it really just confuses things because they all use different terms, or the same ones are used and mean something different.

Ditto on the Fiberglassite.com resins.
But $30 gal is a great price for unwaxed laminating resin, thats the stuff you need.

Laminating is for multiple layups without wax.
Finish resin is waxed.
You can use the unwaxed for the whole job .

Ya thats sort of what I got from the product description on the web page since is said to finish with lay-up when u use laminating, but i'll ask to make sure when i buy it.

And i checked out that site and though i may still get my mat there, its just to expensive to ship resin across the US,(MD to CA), I had the same issue with UScomposites in Florida.

Re: TAP Resin Types

The terms used in the industry are much more technical and possibly too difficult for anyone other than a highly trained and very experienced professional to understand,
they are ......................................................Wax added or waxed and un-waxed. I can explain them in detail if needed.

Because almost no company buys resin with wax added, we put large stickers on any drum that has wax added to it.

If the retail suppliers used the same terms there would be no question as to what they are and which one to buy.
