I'm bad at getting a smooth even caulk bead and want to try the method of putting masking tape on each side of the joint. Question is how long do you let the caulk set up before removing the tape?

Go to the hardware store and buy the little plasic tool for making caulk beads.
you can get different sizes, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2"
Just lay a bead in and follow up with the tool, Makes it look perfect.

A wet towel can clean up a bead pretty well too. Caulking is sorta like welding in that you want to push the bead, not pull it.

Regular painter's masking tape may leave too rough an edge. Try the "fine line" tape - more expensive, but worth it. Pull it off immediately after applying the caulk - if it sets up at all, the edge will tear.

Tried the plastic tools, I stink and the caulk still went around the edges. Use wet towels, is better but I am still an idiot and get it all over, BUT ! I tried the tape method today ( with a good fine line tape) and I impressed myself. Took one third the time, it looks like a pro did it, and I don't have to spend the next three hours trying to get caulk off my body..........

Most caulking problems are due to using way to much caulk. To make a nice smooth corner, moisten a tail light bulb and run it through the bead (again -- don't overdue the caulk). Makes a nice radius.

I agree that most caul mishaps happen from using too much caulk. Less is more in caulking!
