I posted yesterday about not being able to start my boat this past weekend. Had a weak attempt to turn over, then some clicks, then it worked for a few starts, and finally nothing.

So, I went through Don's diagnostic guide here:

Troubleshooting your engines starting system
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167035

I got through the whole guide with my boat, and the test light came on at every step when it was supposed to. Finally, I tried lightly tapping the solenoid while my helper turned the key, and the engine started to turn over.

So...does this mean I need to replace the solenoid, starter, or both?

Thanks for any help!

Probably the solenoid, but when you bump it, you bump the starter too.
Take it off and take it to your local starter/alternator repair shop. Have them check it out.

Did you try cleaning the connections at any point? I've had issues with crudded up connections right at the starter solenoid. Sometimes jarring the connection cleans it just enough to work. I'd probably suggest pulling the wires off at the starter solenoid and cleaning them and the stud. If that doesn't resolve it, pull the starter and have it overhauled. Quite frequently, a tap on an ailing starter will make it go for a while. Could very well be either problem in your case.
