What's good and safe at removing road tar, and grime on a white gelcoat?

Would it hurt to use turtle wax polishing compound sparingly in some areas?

I am planning to wax the boat, but I dont want to wax over the tar, and I dont want to stain it with chemicals.

Re: tar

Fresh road tar and sealer often gets kicked up by the tires, of course this only happens at faster speeds, something our urban members may never experience in the gridlock. :p :D

WD-40 is also good for spraying on eveyrthing, so the dirt has something to stick to.

Re: tar

The trucks that deliver asphalt use kero to clean up.It wont hurt the gelcoat and should remove it immediately.A good coat of wax will make the gelcoat harder to adhere to if it happens again.Charlie

Re: tar

Just a hint for prevention of road tar sticking to your boat or car (assumin that maybe you live near the asphalt plant or something and it is a big problem): There is a product sold for race cars that prevents the gummy nasty rubber-grease residue from the dragstrip from sticking to your paint. Just spray it on like windex and voila! It also does not remove the wax from your paint. You can find it at most speedshops and it works well.
