Hey All,

My name is Jesse and I know nothing about engines or mechanical work. I'm moving to a little home here in Ottawa near the rideau river. I will be purchasing a 12 or 14 foot sportspal transom canoe. I found this little engine TAS TANAKA 1HP Outboard TOB 12b on kijiji and picked it up for $150. The man I purchased it off used it for his canoe and had it going fine last fall before he winterized it. The thing is so light!!! I have read everything I could about it on this forum and watched all the youtube videos on the engine. I'm trying to learn but its a bit overwhelming. Does anybody know a link or have a PDF they could send me on this engines user manual? The links from the other posts dont work for me. I think the websites are gone or the links are dead.

I was also wondering the following:

What type of things should I do to get the engine ready for spring? Spark plug?
I believe its air cooled
What gas/oil should I be using? I heard it was a 50-1 mix gas to oil? Can i just use regular car 91 octane gas? No clue on the oil..
If anybody has any print screens or knows of any videos to take the engine apart to clean it please let me know.
Like i said, im pretty clueless but when I get interested in something I need to know everything i can. I love the look and idea of this little engine and I'd love to make it last as long as possible. If anybody wants photos or any other info on the engine please send me a personal msg with email and I will send them over.

Thanks again for any help guys look forward to learning from the pros!!!

I've been running a Tanaka 3 HP for 30 plus years now and it's super simple to run and maintain....very few problems...

Plug listed is Champion RCJ8. 50-1 mix is, 2.6 ozs per gallon. It's best to err on the high side.
SAE90 outboard gear lube in the gear case.
Rather than opening the gear case try a straw in the fill hole blow in and see if it will drain.
If the lube looks like coffee with cream it means there is a gear case leak.
I would suggest just refill and check after you use it.
