It's my 1983 Johnson 35 hp. Seahorse

I did the water pump and every thing went back perfict the motor runs great but sometime the streem out the tattletail is weak and at other times it's strong I've noticed when it's strong a little. Water is shot out the two exhaust holes at the top of the shaft if that makes sence it's the to top holes
and when the tattletail is weak the water shooting out the two exhaust holes is strong

It's not loseing any power or performance i don't think and I take out my boat at least 2 times a week

Just woundering what it can be and if that's bad cause I have had some purty bad luck with this motor

Thanks for all the info Michael

those 2 holes on your exhaust section are the exhaust relif holes... water should come out of there when the lower unit is submerged, this creats back pressure on ur exhaust and send the water out of those holes.. if not, the water would go up into the block(not good).. maybe you have blockage somewhere if the pee stream isnt too strong.. hows the water temp coming out of there?

Is the motor overheating??

The tell tale isn't very important and tells you almost zero about whether it's overheating. All it tells is if the pump is pumping or not.

On mine, I have noticed the tell tale gets a little weaker when the thermostat opens.
If you can comfortably hold your hand on the head, the motor isn't overheating.

The thermostat opens, or supposed to open at 145 deg.

Re: Tattletail weak streem but exhaust spits alot of water

The tattle tale is before the water goes through the block. The exhaust relief water is after it goes through the block.

So think about it, when the thermostat is closed, it puts a restriction on the water getting out of the block. That increases the pressure within the block, which also increases the pressure at the entrance to the block---where the tell tale is. So it squirts more because of the increased pressure.

Likewise, when the thermostat opens, pressure is relieved and therefor less pressure where the tell tale is, so it squirts less.

Oh ok thanks it makes sence it's just like a car

But the only thing is I don't know if my motor has a thromostat dose every outboard have one

I looked in the repair book and where the thromostat was in a higher hp motor it wasent in mine

There's no visiabal thromostat houseing

Also it just seems to be weak or strong at all different times like after a week of sitting and the first start up it's weak but the next week it will come out strong

I'm just trying to make sure I'm not damageing anything easle

Thanks for the info

It does have a thermostat. It is behind the thin cover plate on the cylinder head. It is sort of a goofey setup, with a spring holding it down against the head. Water pressure can lift it off the head and allow more flow, even if the 'stat is closed. OMC called it "Thermostat/Pressure controlled cooling system". Best just not worry about it. It will give you a headache if you do.
