Greetings

I have a bunch of teak on my aging Celebrity VBR 210......Most is ornamental (window frame, cushion trim, perimeter trim, etc.) and rarely gets wet. I also have a swim platform across the entire stern that is fading gray (obviously much water contact and drying out)

I tried hitting it all with Teak Oil....marginal results on ornamental (in fact it looked like it did not penetrate) and very good but temporary improvement / protection on platform (soaked it up / washes off).

1) I likely need to do a full restoration on the platform - Recommendations?

2) The ornamental teak looks marginal but, could the ornamental have been varnished by prior owner? Common? Do I strip, sand, and revarnish the "water-free teak"? or Strip and oil it?

Teak seems to be a hassle but defintely looks good when clean and oiled up....seems labor intensive.......Please advise

Thnx

Re: Teak Management

hey there!

I have been systematically refinishing all the teak in my boat since I have started restoring it. It's not to hard. What I did was sand it down until the gray was gone and the natural teak wood color was visible again. I used 150 grit then finished it off with 220 and it came up great. Then put the teak oil on it and it has that natural new teak look. Remember, you are only looking to take off a couple millimeters; enough to get past that gray dried out color. Take EVERYTHING apart as much as possible so you can get at all the cracks and crevasses and remember to take your time, it will definitely be rewarded.
