teak refinishing

our 1978 srv24 is covered in teak and we want to try to get it back to like new ,if we just oil should we do it with several coats ,how long between coats,,should the swim platform be done the same? thanks

We would redo Our swim deck each season. We would sand it with 150 grit, to remove any rough spots or areas where the finish had come off. Then we would apply Watco Teak oil in one or 2 coats. This made for a very nice finsh, but a word of caution, it could be a bit slick when wet.

Welcome to Iboats Bob..

If you sand down your teak.. I would apply as much oil as it wants to drink up ( 2 coats a day untill it stops drinking ).

There is no real answer to how many coats ( I have some teak that would almost sink because its so rich in oil ).

In the elements I would take 30 mins every few weeks and wipe on a light coat of teak oil..

Oh yea..dont breath the dust when sanding.. teak is nasty stuff..

Ayuh,... I agree,...

Teak is a Constant maintenance thing...
The More you oil it, the Better it looks, 'n the Longer it lasts....

thanks for all the come backs ,now i just have to wait for the snow to melt or take the teak off and in to the shop,think ill do the latter cant wait till spring. bob
