Tech dummy question

I recently purchased a Garmin 421 GPS unit and I am having a hard time (haven't been able to) accessing any detailed map of the Florida panhandle. I get an overlay map, but it has no detail to it; channels, bouys, wrecks, etc. I thought from the advertisement that this unit came with maps. Can anyone guide me on how to access them, or will I need to purchase the map card. Thanks for you help.

Welcome to iboats!

The base maps that come with chartplotters are usually very, well, basic.

You'll have to get the SD card specific for your unit for the detail (it's worth it). Check eBay and CL for deals. The one for my 2006C chartplotter is normally 140.00, and I found new on eBay for $45.
