Question #1: does a compression check tell you anything about crank shaft seals or crank case seals. my outboard has minor fire damage (thanks to arson). the heat does not seem to have been too severe. the cowling is fried. the oil injection pump melted and electric fuel primer is scorched a few wires and a couple of hoses melted. i want to find out if i can revive this baby.

Question #2: also my outboard VRO oil injection pump is damaged. I want to remove it and use premix fuel. can i remove/ bypass the whole VRO oil injection pump?

thanks
-Sean

#1 I doubt that anything internally would have been affected. A compression check will not tell you about crank seals. You can check the case seal when you start it up again by squirting soapy water and looking for bubbles.

#2 Sure you can chunk the VRO. Install a regular pump and mix your gas 50:1.

No a compression test will not give you any indecation of the condition of the seals. The only test that I know of is to put oil or soap on the seal and see if it bubbles or sucks in.
As far as question #2 goes they have a fuel pump only kit to replace the VRO. I think.
With out seeing your unit its hard to make a call from here, but if nothing under the flywheel is melted, I'd say the 0dds would be good that the crankshaft seal is OK.

What is the price diffrence between a vro fuel/oil pump and a simple fuel pump? is it practical to dump the vro pump and install a simple pump. is the simple pump mountable on the engine?

There is about $100.00-$150.00 difference between the two. You can mount one without the oil pump with no problem, other than fabricating a small bracket, if even that is needed depending on the motor. Just tell the dealer that you want one for a 88HP Special Motor. They did not come with oil injection and should match up fine.

Woods.... Whether you convert a VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, or switch over to the actual fuel pump only setup, the following would apply.

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quanity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

FYI.... If your VRO is destroyed, I do have a few new older VRO pumps that could very easily be used on your engine and converted as above rather than using the costly new regular pump. I'd part with one for $40.00 and take care of shipping if within the US.

ReevesJ32@aol.com
