I took apart my TW 5.5 model #217-59430, and the impeller fell out in a million pieces. Sears wants appro $35.00 for a new one. My question is: want will happen if I run the engine without the impeller? I know that all is does is cool the lower unit where the exhaust vents. The impeller has been gone for a long time based on it's condition and age.Obviously the impelller is important, but how much so. Is the water cooling mainly for high speed running? Or, maybe just mainly for trollling speeds.
You guys were great in giving me info on the proper mixture to use in this motor. I got it running and it starts easily.

Thanks for any opinions on the impeller

nakman8,You will surely burn your engine up with no waterpump impeller. You most definately need to replace it.

Nakman
The impeller pumps water thru your engine just like the water pump on your car. Without it your engine will over heat and seize up. Replace it or just send engine to junk yard.

This is an aircooled engine. Fins on the cylinder
and fan blades on flywheel. I was told that the impleller only pumps water to cools the lower housing as the exhaust gases pass thru it. I thought maybe that at trolling speeds it might not be necessary.

Hi nakman 8

As far as I remember the impeller cools the exhaust in the intire midsection from the cylinder eshaust on these air-cooled models. It is no good running without it. The "leg" will get very hot and probably damage gaskets a.s.o. Invest in a new, my h.o.
