just picked up a ted williams 7.5, serial #3g185192, can any tell me from the serial number what year and what the oil mix is, does it have points? I do know that it is a tecumsuh, air cooled. Motor was sitting for 3-4 years before i acquired it. It was fired up before i got it. I know it needs a new plug and have drained the old gas out, that is about as far as i've gotten, any other tips will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Re: ted williams 7.5 help

Need a model number to pinpoint year.Built by Eska.Aircooled powerhead with a water cooled exhaust leg.Point type ignition depends on the year.
Check the waking sleeping outboard posting at the top of the section.
You should have a service manual before working on the motor.
These motors are marginal performers but are usually inexpensive to acquire.

Re: ted williams 7.5 help

73 built by Eska 24:1 fuel mix with chain saw 2 stroke oil.My after market manual states both types of ignition are used.My older manual says the AV750 7hp. powerhead uses breakerless ignition.which appeared in 69.We can assume that your 7.5 uses breakerless ign even though it uses a different number AV-817 powerhead.

Re: ted williams 7.5 help

what kind of a spark plug do i need and how much gap. while cleaning i found a metal tag on the head which has tecumsuh stamped in it with some numbers, does this mean anything? you mentioned 24:1 chainsaw oil, is it the same mix with a tcw-3 rated oil? would you recommend putting on a new carb kit and does anyone(website) which has owners manuals pdf'd. thanks an obvious novice, i've maintained motors, just never had to get them running, thanks

Re: ted williams 7.5 help

Yes, if it has a coil on the head, it's electronic ignition. Parts are almost impossible to find for that ignition system, and very expensive when you can find them. eBay or an outboard junkyard like tcoutboards.com are about the only hope. So, if you have spark, you're lucky.

Do not use TCW-3 oil to mix with the fuel. Use the chainsaw oil, at 24:1. The chainsaw oil is designed for the needs of air-cooled 2-stroke engines like yours.
