I have a 1975 ted williams 7.5 motor. I have to remove the lower unit , I removed the lower bolts, the shaft slid down only so far. On other motors ive worked on, the shifter adj muast be removed to get the lower end off. On this motor the shifter is a thumb lever, Does this have to be removed to release the shaft..Any help would be appriciated.joev

Re: Ted williams 7.5 lower unit removal.

If like my 7.5 gamefisher (Ted Williams, eska) there is a little rectangular plate on the starbord side of lower leg just above cavitation plate which has two screws in it. Remove this plate and there is a shift rod which has one bolt holding it to the lower shift rod. Remove this little bolt and lower unit will fall out if the other two bolts holding lower unit have been removed. It is very similar to lower unit removal on small johnsons I've worked on.

Randy, Thanks for the advice . After looking .Their is no plate on the shaft like the 9.9s.The only option i think is to remove the motor from the base.Sorry for the late reply i was away. Thanks again..Joe

No plate below the fisrt set of fins? Two screwes to hold it? If not will the shift slid enought to get to the adjuster screw for it. If so this needs to be removed and the foot will drop. ESKA calls it an inspection plate I believe.

Re: Ted williams 7.5 lower unit removal.

Randy thanks for the post this helped me remove my lower unit of my gamefisher. But now how do I put it back on? I guess I should give some history on this. My motor starts fine, I put it in the water and shift it to engage the propeller. Wouldn't ya know the boat doesn't even move. I pull it out and it turns out the propeller doesn't spin. So I removed the lower gear casing. Gear looks striped. so I decided to remove the whole lower unit to see if there is a problem with the drive shaft. Drive shaft looks good, but I am concerned that whatever the drive shaft hooks up to (on the motor end) may not be working. an easy way to check this would be to remove the propeller gear and see if the gear pinion spins when I start up the motor. Well I removed the lower unit and can't get it back on so I can't check to see if this is the case.
