If you have an electronic ignition, your best bet on the transformer assembly is to replace the original unit with this particular 18-5193 OMC style coil:

http://www.amazon.com/Sierra-International-18-5193-Ignition-Evinrude/dp/B00027H1F8

The OMC coils are still in production, sold by Sierra and a few others, and are very easy to get. Most are made by the German company Prufrex, and are nearly indestructible. I did this conversion on my 7.5 and it works great. The inspiration for doing so was provided by this article:

Now regarding the electronic ignition module under the flywheel, an outright rebuild of your unit can be done by CDI Electronics, though it's not especially cheap to do that. There is some info on repairing these units at this site:

yes I have the part. It was running last week at the lake---it started sputtering and quit never could get started have tried here at home in a barrel with water and can not even get a spark. Is this what you would suggest that is wrong with it?

Steve I was looking at the sears parts diagram and because there diagram was so poorly scanned for your model I thought you had a newer style magneto, NOT! you have a Solid State ignition, lucky for you we have a fix and its cheap:D, you will however want to join our Eska yahoo group for details. Our group fix is about 25$ plus shipping. We have a PDF file that will enlighten you. Send me a PM if you have any further questions.
