teflon paste for exaust manifold drain plug?

i am about to replace female drain plug on the exhaust manifold, and was wondering if using a teflon paste is a good idea? i tried teflon tape, but it just would not stay on properly.

What's the full model number of your engine? The letter/s after the 5.0GL.

Teflon tape has no business on a boat, for anything. Paste, or even liquid gasket sealer on the threads. If they leak, I would have to ask if you leave the plugs out over winter. If you do, that allows rust to build up on the threads. Could be time to tap the holes out of rust if that's the problem.

the plug consists of a larger female part and a smaller male part that looks very much like a bolt. i typically unscrewed the male part to let the manifold drain, with the female part remaining within the manifold at all times. but at some point, the male part seized within the female part, and both came out together. since i was unable to pry the two apart, i bought a brand new set, and about to screw the female part back into the manifold. what i noticed were traces of some sort of a white goop on the outer thread of the female part, so i just assumed that some sort of a sealing agent was used to prevent leaking. if teflon paste is not the way to go, what is?

as for the engine, it is a GL 5.0 B

Those parts are common brass pipe bushing and brass pipe plug. Brass, not copper. Most hardware, plumbing, and big box stores carry them. Teflon paste is fine, just not the teflon tape.
The white stuff Volvo uses is just a gasket sealer. It's white. Never really liked the stuff. It doesn't help prevent corrosion in some of the other applications it's used in. Good ole Permatex aviation gasket sealer non hardening liquid works much better.

thanks, Don. found the Permatex gasket sealer #3 in a store nearby, so i will go with it instead of a teflon paste.
