Teleflex cable to engine connection

I just installed the rack and pinion helm on my boat, the connection to the engine seemed simple but I can get the thing through the hole in the engine.

Do you have to take anything apart on the steering cable before you can push it through the hole or do you just have to force this thing in there? I tried greese and pushing, blood and sweat It just won't budge, I also have a bad angle unless I take the whole engine off the boat. Anyway am I doing this wrong? I wish I could explain it better but it really is just trying to push a rod through a hole!

make sure the tube is clean and rust free. and some hulls will reqiure unbolting the engine from the hull and twisting it sideways.

The end of the cable has to have a straight run into the tilt tube. If its at an angle, it cannot be forced through. Undo the two starboard mounting bolts and the lower port bolt. Loosen the upper port bolt and simply pivot the bottom of the motor to starboard. This will put the tilt tube at an upward angle so the cable end can be slid straight in. If the old cable came out easy, the new one should go in easy.

I was afraid you were going to say that, I just bolted the engine to the transom yesterday, didn't think I would need to install the teleflex first but now I know, RATS!!

Would it work to remove the cable from the helm and install the other end on the motor first and then reconnect the cable to the helm?
Did you make sure the steering wheel is turned fully to the left so the cable is fully extended?

Check the teleflex web site. I think the cable can be bent tighter than you think. They list the bend radious somewhere.

Thats not for installing though....if its like my 20 footer, to get the end rod in the tube, you need to move the motor sideways. No room in the wetwell........
