i have a teleflex gas gauge to replace the gas gauge on a ranger bass boat that has yamaha multi function gauges here is how i wired the new gauge

found the hot wire or pink wire from sending unit and cut it under dash and hooked to new gauge that has S TERMINAL then found a hot wire under dash with key on and connected to the I TERMINAL on the light unit it has a push on tab i found a ground under dash pluged it on the light and the gas gauge went to full that is what gas there is i just filled tank it did not go past full just to full the only thing is the light in gauge does not work no big deal but if i take bulb out then there is no ground connection and gauge goes past full like it would if some thing is wrong what have i done incorrectly as the light does not work.

this is my guess would like to know if this is my problem should i ground the wire to center post that would be the other half of light fixture and run another hot wire to the other side of light unit thanks in advance

Re: teleflex gas gauge ?

The hot wire for the light should come from the NAV/ANCHOR switch or whatever switch controls the instrument lights. There is no logical reason to have the instrument lights on in broad daylight. If they all come on when the key is on, then the light hot wire can be connected to the "S" terminal as well. If there is a separate ground wire for the light, it and the ground wire for the gauge can go to the same ground point.

I don't believe anything other than the sending unit in the gas tank should be connected to the S connection on the gauge, as any other draw or drain on the gauge can cause an incorrect reading or even overload the coil and the gauge will be ruined.
