I am working on a pontoon boat with a 40hp honda it has a teleflex rotary nfb. After researching it online, It seems that I have to replace the helm and cable is this true?
The reason for the replacement is it locks up turning to port or starboard and then when you turn it the opposite direction and then turn it back it frees up for awhile. Seems to me like a wire off of one of the internal cables is catching. Any ideas would be great!

You should be able to order just the cable, no need to replace the helm unless it is bad, I know they are 2 peices.

I've always thought for the little difference between the price of the cable and the whole steering kit that includes a new helm you might as well buy the whole kit and have everything new. Thinking is if cable has worn out, the helm is probably worn too and I just don't want to waste a moment of my boating time worrying about it.

I would call Teleflex customer support. Google them. They are great and they can tell you if the hub is bad!

You may be mistaking operation of the NFB system with something catching. NFB has a clutch that requires just a bit of turning force on the wheel to release it. Once released and you are turning the wheel it turns freely. Once you stop turning, or change directions, you may feel that catch again briefly. That is perfectly normal operation.

thanks silver but this is definatley locking up and wont turn untill turning back the other way at least one full and somtimes more. Sometimes you have to turn it back and forth a couple of times to get it to turn freely. My concern is if it locks up perminatly while in the middle of the lake. It seems to only lock up when turning left.

Re: teleflex nfb system

I just ran into this on my old(ok ancient) teleflex rotary. The gears in mine, one large one small, were the issue. The small gear ended up breaking 3 teeth off, these teeth would stick to the grease in the big gear, keeping them in place, so when the gear made a 100% revolution, it would then have good teeth on the small sprocket, trying to go into spaces already occupied by the broken off teeth. I had to remove the teeth from the big gear, and break another tooth, about to snap, off, before i could limp home. Id replace the whole kit, not just the cable. Or you could pull the cable out of the helm and check it, and then if its ok, take the helm apart. Its not rocket science just be sure you pay attention how it comes apart.
