I have been trying everything I can for the last 2 days trying to disconnect the steering cable from the helm. I am having zero luck in doing so. I remove the pin like it says to on the tag. When I insert the pin into the release hole it does absolutely nothing, doesn't budge at all. When I look at the hole while pushing the pin into it it looks like it is just a hole with metal behind it. And it has no movement. I'm wanting to remove it so I can take the dash out to recarpet my boat. It is in the way of some carpet. I have watched multiple videos and looked at multiple posts and none have helped. Thank you for your help.

I'm pretty sure the directions tell you to push it into the WRONG hole.
Look for a hole on the opposite side.

While you're pushing on the pin also push & pull on the outer sheath of the cable, it's probably sticking because it's loaded.

Like trying to turn your car on if the steering wheel is locked & loaded from the steering wheel lock.

Once it's out and you see how it works it will all make sense.

(If you're pushing on it with something other than the pin & the pin is still in it's little slide then it won't unlock. The pin in the slide prevents the locking washer from moving (by memory))

I am using the pin that comes out of the locking part. Even while pulling on the sheath no movement is happening. What possibly could be making it loaded?

By pulling on the sheath while you are pushing on the pin you are making it harder.
You need to jiggle the sheath until the pin moves then the sheath will come out.

Successfully disconnected the cable. Now my next question is how to remove the plastic bezel. It doesn't pull off of the wheel arbor.

If this is what you're talking about I used a ball joint puller that I borrowed from my local car mechanic.

There should be a removable woodruff key in the shaft?
Take a picture of the problem.

Ayuh,.... It's a 1/2 moon shaped piece of steel,....

Just tap it out with a hammer, 'n chisel,...

It just pulls out.
It's really the taper that grips the wheel but the key would be there to ensure it goes on & off in the same location & probably a little backup in case the taper slips.
Grab it withe vicegrips or multigrips & give it a pull, they usually come out pretty easy.

Edit: Hitting is good too. (Bondo)
