I am having too much play in the helm of my 1998 mercruiser steering on a Chaparral 240 signature. I have diagnosed it down to the steering cable or helm. The cable doesn't move at the stern end when I experience the play while turning the wheel at the helm. The components at the outdrive are not the problem, it is play when turning the wheel at the helm. Are there any adjustments I can do at the helm (or at the stern) to remove what feels like excess cable slack at the helm?

Nope,.... The inner cable wears into the outer cable housing causin' slack, 'n the helm can wear as well,.....
Sounds like you need a new cable, 'n helm Kit,....

Don't know of any adjustment. Mine was doing similar years ago and I had to replace helm and cable
