Teleflex steering

I just bought a Teleflex NFB system to convert bass boat to remote steering. It's hooked up to a 25hp 1985 Evinrude electric start motor. First and only issue I noticed is that going either direction it only turns until the motor is still about 1" away from the stop. Doesn't seem right and I don't want to have handling problems or not be able to get out of some barge's path. It was setup for cable/rope steering and had a light gauge bracket on the steering "arm?" (what is that wrap around style bar called anyway?) The bracket said "this side up for rope steering" on it. Tried reversing it (for teleflex?) and no go. About the same 1" from stop one way and hardly turned the opposite direction. (because it had 2 holes/1 on each side/instead of 1 on center (for the cable hooks)So I took that off and just went to the centered mounting hole that was under the bracket. Turns about the same degree both directions now but like I said only goes to about an inch from stops. Anybody ever dealt with this before? I'm not sure what would help. The Teleflex only has just so much throw and I'm using the Evinrude/Johnson steering link. So???

In the past they use to make an adapter that moved the pivot point to the rear of the steering bracket to overcome that problem, but I don't know if it's available any more

Re: Teleflex steering

Slabhunter... I am looking into replacing my steering as well. I cant help you ond your question but had one for you. How is the Teleflex on slop. My current steer system has about 3/4 inch eithor way at the wheel. In otherwords... Engine won't budge until turn the wheel some. Is the Teleflex system tight and easy to turn? I will be putting on 75hp. Thanks and good luck.

Re: Teleflex steering

The teleflex is pretty tight. There's about 1/4" slop at the motor sleeve which I could probably take up by adjusting the sleeve on the motor but with the issue I've got that just compounds my problem so I'm accepting that bit of slop as the lesser of two evils for now. Might be normal or negligible with the steering wheel mounted. First time I've installed one though I've owned a few boats with it. As for easy to steer I don't have the steering wheel yet and it's new and pretty torquey with a pair of vise grips and I don't want to scarf up the shaft. Overall it's a vast improvement over the tiller or rope cable systems. For me anyway. Sittin sideways or reaching around behind me for an hour does "bad" things to my 47 year old bones and fishing should be enjoyable thru and thru so... Don't see any reason you wouldn't love the Teleflex. It's pretty much the mainline industry standard for steering unless you want to spend big bucks for hydraulic which I doubt a 75hp would need. Good luck and tight lines!<br /> ;)

Re: Teleflex steering

You know, I tried reversing the bracket from the old rope/pulley system that said "this side up for rope steering so it moved it to the rear of the steering bracket but that didn't do the job. It's more like the throw on the Teleflex just isn't long enough. The steering bracket is pretty wide looking too but I could be wrong. It's 8" bolt centers at the transom clamp bolts. A shorter steering link would give me improvement one way but do me dirty the other so I'm still scratchin my head over it when I'm not busy scratchin it about something else perplexing like women and non-alcoholic beer.
