Teleflex tachometer readings-too high

The tachometer on my 2002 4 stroke efi 60hp jet shows between 1200 and 1800 rpm when the motor is shut off. When idling, it reads about 1200 to 1500 rpm. The motor has no problems running up to 6000 rpm on that tach, and when pushed for just a few seconds will easily pull up to 6300 rpm. Is it safe to assume that I'm reading about 500 rpm more than the motor is actually spinning (idle is set at 800)? Is there a fix for this Teleflex tach, or just replace it? Thanks!

What does the tach read with the key ON -- but the engine NOT running? If it is still in the 1200 - 1800 range you need a new tach. If it drops to zero (as it should) then you need to verify accuracy with a shop tach.

It shows 1200 to 1500 with key on, not running. Any recommendations for a decent tach? Would this motor support the Mercury SmartCraft system? I'm thinking of also installing either a water pressure or head temp gauge- do you know which would be a better engine health indicator while river running?
