So...although I’d like to think that I’ve acquired a fair bit of general know how over the years and perhaps even might say that I spent a decade as a marine engineer, (all be it at sea and with much larger marine diesels and anything else that’s on a ship)...currently still an engineer in renewables (boo and hiss I hear you say, haha)....
But I’m transparent enough to always try and get a hold on things I’m not familiar with.
so with this particular item...I honestly to god haven’t looked it up online, for fear of just getting a useless spectrum of what may be false or may be true info on it. By posting here, I know a few trusted members will give me it straight and the need to look elsewhere is not required.
The reason....
Although I’ve had a Merc 200 black max and a later 98 merc 150 smoker...I never had the need to work on them at all, other than usual yearly stuff. Didn’t have them long enough either I suppose.
But I now have a merc black max 150 2.0 which I’ve recently fitted to a classic CVX16. I’ve only had it running for about 20 mins on the boat it came off of originally.
Before getting it, I checked compression was good and took it off the guy cheap.
I then put the boat it was then on in the water to take the two across to the island the cvx16 was on and to do the transplant. I fired her up and she started with ease.
So...now I notice she is pumping very little water at idle from the tell tale. But a little rpm and she blows it out well. Felt the heads and no sign of real heat.
All went well on the quick journey across to the island. Had a wee blast near full throttle and she was strong.
As I approached the island, I slowed down to Idke rpm in gear and the tell tale weakened again. I got to shore and shut her down.
The engine is now on the CVX but not been ran. I’m well aware about impellers of course and will be doing that before she goes in. But just there the thought around poppet valves and their assumed principles came into mind. Is this like an idle relief idea ? Do these old things perhaps not always pump water from tell tale depending on the TStat and the very cold water she was ran in ever since briefly ?
i don’t remember my old 200 not having a flow at idle and certainly the later 150 always did.
Give me your thoughts, other than the impeller ? Likely I’m worried about nothing and the impeller will sort it out fine.
Thanks.
