So my daughter is thinking of doing her Graduate school at NC State, she is a Colorado Native, she is my Son in Girls clothing and above all else she has my Integrity deep through her soul, the first thing I checked when she told me was if we(colorado) had reciprocity with NC which we do so her CCW will be valid there, I have a very close friend that was LEO in the area and he knows my daughter, while he told me that she will love the area she will become very aware of the difference in skin color where as we in Colorado are not, he loved his time there but he hated the fact that sometimes things just come down to Race there. His knowledge of the area made me feel pretty good but I still have issues with her living all the way across the country in a whole 'nother part of the world, she is my oldest so that has a lot to do with my reservations but I told her last week that now that she is going to be a Senior next year she deserves the opportunity to choose where she goes to do her Graduate School, unfortunately I was hoping it would be out west....(!@#$%^&).

Maybe I am just spoiled by the fact that one of my Brothers in Blue(here) is Black and it never even crossed my mind that he was, he is one of the people I asked about the South and while he had good things to say about the area he had very different views then my other friend who was a LEO out there his opinion is that the best thing he ever did in his life was to leave the South. Maybe I'm thinking to much about it...

I have a hard time with the fact that parts of our country still has issues with a persons skin color complete BS.

Other then that I am sorry to Bob, JB and/or who ever else has to lock this thread because I know its riding a very thin line but in all honesty, the issue at hand makes me physically sick.

Did I mention that she is a Brick PoopHouse? Someday I am going to have to find out who her Father really is so I can find out where she got her Looks from....

It's a scary thing when any one of your kids goes far away for the first time. Our son spent 5 months in Germany last year and I'll tell you, you can really feel helpless sometimes. But, he survived as they will do.

We found that regular skype sessions went a long way toward relieving the stress and anxiety and keeping up on how things were going. I'll admit it's probably harder to let a daughter go far away like that than a son. I believe she will get along just fine, it's way harder on the parents. To the younguns it's all a big adventure. It's probably for the best that they are a little naive when they are young, otherwise folks wouldn't try new things. It's all a part of growing up (for both of you!) Good luck!

As father myself, I understand why you have concerns. But as fathers we have to realize that the chicks do eventually fly from the nest, just as you did when you began a life away from home. Sometimes it's farther than we like but trust the values you and her mother taught her. Heck she has a CCW so she learned something from you. I wouldn't worry about the race thing. If you treat people right, they treat you right. That is my sincere feeling.

Now on the Raleigh part. I spent almost 3 1/2 years a long time ago a bit south of there, at a place called Ft. Bragg. I was in the Air Force so I was actually stationed at Pope AFB. I went up to Raleigh occasionally to get away from the military life for a few days. The city wasn't bad and the general area had a lot to do. Ocean to the east, mountains (not the Rockies for sure) west. I'm sure things have changed over the years but I did find the natives to be friendly to a Yankee boy. She's gonna do just fine.

No comment on paternity issues. LOL

There is no boogyman in the new south, Lipp. If your daughter has not experienced a multi ethnic community it is about time she did.

Yes there are some bigots there, but there are bigots everywhere and we need to deal with them, not pretend they are not there.

My Bro graduated from NC State many years ago. Now I have great nieces and great nephews there. They have all turned out pretty well.

Prejudices are everywhere and most, as in the South, go far beyond ones skin color. Unless you?ve lived it or lived around it you can?t understand how deep the roots are.

Having said that, coming from a good ?Northern? family that moved to the south at a very young age. I can say w/o a doubt that ?Northerners? are far more prejudice than they think when put into the situation. After 25 years, my Northern raised wife still denotes the color of one?s skin when describing a person of color to other whites. I found it interesting that you did the same.

Raleigh-Durham isn't exactly Hicksville, by a long shot.

This one may be a little weird, but there are almost as much Americans in Canadian universites as Canadians because the tuition is almost a 1/8 the price even with the living out.
The world comes to Canada for there education, check it out, no fibbing bud.

(And I would mention we got real beer up here, but you don't need to hear that yet! )

It won't let me post any smilely/grin faces.

rbh speaks the truth, on both matters!;)

I might have mentioned that my northern (very) NY-raised cousin has lived in Virginia for 25-30 years, and loves it.

You seriously would still worry even if she moved one town over from where you are. You are a parent! It's our job to worry.......

Your daughter will do just fine. Yes, you are over thinking the situation but that is natural.

Tell your daughter good luck and I hear that Raleigh is even expected to get running water and flush toilets in the near future!! :D

Actually your daughter will chuckle when she sees snow and the panic it creates among the Southern driver's!! ;)

Re: Tell me about Raleigh NC

Finally a thread I AM an expert on :D:facepalm:I have lived near Raleigh for 46 yrs and the whole area has changed a great deal in that time. It was a semi rural, sometimes sleepy area but the population has exploded and natives are outnumbered by newcommers from all over the nation and world now. I believe alot of transplants come to N.C. for the colleges, NCstate, UNC, Duke, Merideth, Shaw, etc.-fall in love w the state, and don't want to leave. Others come for work at large, high tech firms like IBM,Cisco, Industrial or pharmacutical plants etc. It has become a little crowded IMO, and homebuilding and growth is a big buisness here even w the bad economy. It is no more Racist here than other booming metropolitan areas in the south IMO in fact probably less because of so many people from everywhere who live here now. A joke about Cary N.C. goes Cary- Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees!! I hate to say it, but N.C. is a great place to live and as said before the mountains and coastal areas are absolutly beautifull along w other rural parts of the state, and the weather is usually OK. I would only worry that your daughter will not want to come home, once she lives here a while! YOU might not either, after visiting her here!! There are good folks all over our great state, and some bad ones too, just like anywhere.

Lipp...you're gonna find the same "kind" of people no matter where you go. You said early on in your post that she has your integrity. Truth is, by now, you've given her all the judgemet skills that you ever will. Let her go make her way.

As a native from North Carolina(charlotte) I can offer some advice. The people here who are natives find it very offensive when others NOT from this area make general statements about the people here .It becomes a problem when THEY COME HERE AND DO IT. Even using the term "the south" can be considered racially offensive and prejudice. The area of North Carolina where you find these schools is so diversive it can not be used as an example of any specific type of attitudes found though out the state.

Glad to hear it; the saying that it's a small world often works out in these things!

Re: Tell me about Raleigh NC

Lipp, I lived in Durham (right next to Raleigh) for a few years before moving to the Atlanta area. What I found there was that Raleigh, like Atlanta (and most every other major city in the south) has a population where transplants waaaay outnumber locals. Between the Research Triangle Park which has companies like GSK (phama), IBM, Netapp, Merk, Etc Etc (over 9K tech and pharma companies in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle) and the major universities in the area (UNC, NC State, Duke) there is an incredibly diverse population in the area. I personally think the area is great for a younger person attending university. As to any kind of bigotry, you will find that anywhere you go. There are some people that will find a reason to dislike someone else and claim some kind of superiority over them. Luckily they are a small minority and I feel that minority is getting smaller and smaller all the time.

Re: Tell me about Raleigh NC

I worked a job for about a year in the Raligh area, built the PYA Monarch distribution center in Zebulon N.C right across the road from the Mudcat Stadium.

The 3 things I remeber most about the area are the Bar-B-Q joints, apple jack moonshine, and the kkk rallies making the news.

Had a dang good black skilled laborer that worked for me there, I tried to get him to come to Alabama but he wouldn't do it. He told me "Noooo I aint goin' down there, they turn the firehoses on and sick the dogs on black people down there!!!", I told him "That was back in the 60's Daylon, they don't do that now... the kkk is worse here now than down in 'Bama now". He told me " I know how to deal with them up here, I aint gonna have no dogs sicked on me!"

... but really, you can't judge a place from just hearsay... you have to actually go there and stay for a while. I never had any problems up in Raligh other than thieves breaking into the jobsite tool trailer... but they do that everywhere you go. All the people I met and worked with up there were just the regular good ol' folks you meet anywhere across the south... except for southeast Florida, now there's a place to be afraid of!!!

Re: Tell me about Raleigh NC

I hear ya guys but make no mistake I am not moving anywhere!!!

My daughter well.... I hope she loves the area but not so much that she moves there!!

When it all comes down to it, she has made the right decisions so far and I have no reason to believe that she will make a wrong decision now, I support her, but will certainly miss her, this does however give me a reason to check out some lakes over in the "South"!!
