Hello all

I am new to this forum and to boating in general.

I am about to plunk down some cash on a used boat motor trailer package.

I've done tons of research and feel that this is the best boat available in my immediate location which satisfy's my wants & needs.

Will be taking it out tomorrow for a sea test with reliable marine mechanic and current owner. All indications are that the boat has had proper servicing through out it's lifetime and the owner has been meticulous for performing things like proper fuel storage, motor flush, filter changes, etc etc etc.

Of course you never really know and can easily buy a piece of junk unknowingly, which leads to my post.

The motor is a 1999 Johnson v-6 carburated 150hp model J150pxees
ser # G04657274

What can anybody tell me about their experiences with this motor and things I should look out for. I have read all the information about VRO to find that in most cases it gets a bad rap as the cause of alot of motor failures when in actuality there is usually some other cause.

If you have first hand knowledge of this model johnson 150 hp motor, please share your info before I make a huge financial mistake.

I am doing my best to be an informed purchaser and am trying to dot all the I's and cross all the T's

That is one heckuva motor, you should love it.

Bringing the mechanic is a good idea. I would definately check the compression, head for overheating, gear oil for water intrusion, etc...

Take her for a good rip and ensure she runs well once warm, and she does not overheat at all.

What boat is this mounted on? Be sure that the boat is sound, no soft spots in the transom, floor, stringers.

Trailer in good condition?

Regarding the VRO, you are correct that the ppl that trash them are usually not very well informed. BTW, you would actually have an OMS system, which was introduced in '93 to replace the VRO2.

Have a read here for more information, happy boating and tight lines.

Re: Tell me anyting about this engine

Thanks Chris,

I was beginning to have second thoughts. I am purchasing it on a 2000 19 ft McKee craft center console. I plan to use the boat for fishing the intercoastal & cape fear river here in Wilmington, NC.

I will occasionally take the package out into the Atlantic probably in the 5 - 15 mile range on days when the seas are relatively flat and the winds lay low.

I think this size boat and motor package are ideal for me since I am new to boating as I have always been a fishing passenger never a boat owner before.

The boat has no wood, is completely foam filled and has a very good reputation around these parts.

Have you owned this motor?

Have not had one that new, but worked on a few. Hard to find poor reviews.

If you do get it, and are new to boating, I would reccomend a power squadron/boating course. It will be well worth the money. Get yourself a factory OEM Service Manual, keep on top of the maintainence, and that motor will outlive you.

I would definately check the compression though, will only take minutes but will save thousands on potential faults. We can help you with this if you like.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.
