When I was young, I saw almost everything that came out, but I'm not much of a "movie guy" these days... hollywood stuff mostly seems silly and a waste of time these days (IMHO).... For the most part, I hear of movies from a few friends who tell me about some 5 or 10 year old one that I've never seen before, but are good. I'm down to seeing maybe 6 or 8 movies a year. Probably an equal number that I/we rent but I don't bother watching all the way through.

To give you an idea of my taste (or lack of)... :) here are some that I thought were good:

Lock Stock and 2 smokin' barrels.
Hot Fuzz
Keeping Mum
Snatch
Fargo
Reservoir Dogs
Lord of the Rings & Harry Potter movies were OK

Warning: I'm not a fan of the usual far-fetched "action" movies where all the action is impossible computer-generated, physics-defying things... (unless it's done by a wizard) :)

So.... please save me the usual painful walk around Blockbuster where non of the new releases look to be any good, and give me a couple names of movies that you think are good!

Shawshank Redemption is a really good one. I don't watch movies or TV at all so I wont be very good help here.

Into the Wild.
I can't stand Sean Penn (he directed it) but he did a darn good job here.

I am a B grade or C grade fan myself ..... many of those cheaper movies have up and coming actors or young actors. If you have someone that you enjoy watching go to IMDB.com and look up what movies they did in their earlier years.

There is a huge selection of garbage out there too so you have to do your homework.

I am a fan of Morgan Freeman and I tend to enjoy any movie he has done..... the same for Ed Norton Jr

In the name of the King.

It has Jason Stathom in it and is a wizard/magi medieval movie.

"The Notebook"
"Gladiator"
"Brave Heart"
"3:10 to Yuma"
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
"The Illusionist"
"I Am Legend"
"Fool's Gold"
"Into the Blue"
"Flags of Our Fathers"
"Gran Torino"
"Slumdog Millionaire"
"300"
"The Kingdom"

I find a lot of over looked gems on BadMovies.org.:D

Of course I also find alot of drek there too.

If your taste runs to Zombie movie cheese fests, Zombie Strippers starring Jenna Jameson (Yes, THAT Jenna Jameson.) & Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street.) wasn't half bad.

LOL I think I went through the "it's so bad it's entertaining" phase... now I'd rather do something else with the time.... I haven't watched a zombie/slasher movie for a long time, but there was a time when me and my buddies would watch them all... pause the movie after the first few minutes, and then place wagers on who would get it first.... that made bad movies more entertaining

Re: Tell me good movies to rent.

Just reading the descriptions on Badmovies is LOL funny.
Poultrygeist
drop3-cl.gif
Never build a fried chicken restaurant on top of an Indian burial ground.

The Terror of Tiny Town
drop4-cl.gif
1938 B&W western with an all midget cast. (I'm not joking one bit.)
Plus they have video & audio clips. Get some friends together with a case of beer and Badmovies is good for hours of fun.:D

Wait!?! That was a 'phase'? As in 'supposed to grow out of'?

:D

How can you not love gems like these...
Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy Jane Fonda encounters an Angel, a lava lamp monster, and Duran Duran in the year 40,000.
Death Race 2000 David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone are drivers in a futuristic cross-country car race. Their goal: run over pedestrians.
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn Awesome fun! Evil spirits threaten Ash again, but this time he has an attitude and a chainsaw.
Howard the Duck Only one thing can save Cleveland from destruction: a midget in a duck suit!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space Aliens that look like demented clowns turn a town into cotton candy snacks!
The Rocky Horror Picture Show The grandma cult movie of them all. Watch as Brad and Janet fall prey to the lust of alien transvestites
I just realized how many of these I have already seen.
Worse, I've seen some more than once. A lot more than once.

Re: Tell me good movies to rent.

LOL I've actually seen all of those, some many times.... death race 2000 was a classic. I watched A LOT of movies as a teen/twenty something... sometimes we'd do theme nights... like clown slasher movies etc.... or "carney night" or "camp slasher movies" After a while (and many many movies) the entertainment value from bad movies evaporated.

I watched a few minutes of "National Treasure" the other night... it was on TV... I'd forgotten what a bad movie it is.

Check out Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. We watch them on TV and then found the set in WalMart's bargain bin for $5, can't go wrong at that price.

There are 3 movies in the set, the middle one is a short animated film, pretty cheesy and stupid, but filled in the gaps between the 2 movies. We suffered through it,,, once.

Re: Tell me good movies to rent.

I run a movie theatre & have seen tons of films. Judging by your taste I'd pull out...

Shaun Of The Dead

Inglourious Basterds (In theatres now & if you're a Tarantino fan it's one of his best)

No Country For Old Men

The Big Lebowski

O' Brother Where Art Thou? (keeping with the Coen brothers theme here)

The Royal Tenenbaums

Lone Star (The 1996 film. Didn't get a lot play, but an excellent story)

A friend of mine also suggested Shaun of the dead... need to get that one. Yes, I think you nailed my taste, I haven't seen the Tenenbaums or Lone Star, but liked the others you suggested (haven't seen the new Tarantino yet either)

Thanks all... keep 'em coming... I'm gonna print up a list and put it my wallet for my Blockbuster visits
