'70 Mercury 1150, sn: 2840981

Finally got my engine to start. Now another issue, maybe?

When it first starts up, in a tank, the water started to flow, after a moment, from the tell tale hole. It was a good stream. But then just moments after that it became a sputter. The block was very hot to the touch also. Water pump has a brand new impeller.

In reading here, it seems a few things I need to do are:
• run a wire, or weed eater line, through the tell tale hole to dislodge debris
• pull the exhaust manifold cover to visually check the water passages
• rebuild the entire water pump

What else could it be?

How about thermostats?

on that early model, they hadn't started putting thermostats on yet.

tashasdaddy - let me know what yours turns out to be.

I recently had the lower unit rebuilt. Could the water pump have not been sealed up properly and cause this by allowing exhaust to enter the water intake chamber?

I'll have to check the pin and verify the orientation.

Well, I had the shop that rebuilt my lower unit re-check their work. They say water pump and everything in the lu is as it should be. They seem to think it's something in the power head. Guess that leaves me with water passage blockage or exhaust leaking into the cooling passages. Hoping it’s not a cracked block.

This is what I found when I open the lower unit.
The rear screw holding the water pump housing together is stripped. The exhaust tube seal has a chunk missing from the side next to the water pump.
Could the exhaust be forcing past the seal, through the loose screw and housing, causing the water not to circulate through the engine and turning the impeller blade backwards?

ok that ^ seemed to fixed the water circulation problem, as far as I can tell. The tell tale has a nice stream of water, on muffs.

I sealed the back edge of the water pump housing and the stripped screw threads, plus the lower exhaust tube seal with High Temp RTV Red Silicone.
Also sealed the water pump tube.

That brings up my new situation - http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=29&t=022418
