It my boat's maiden voyage (at least maiden after I bought it), after a gutting the interior, and replacing the engine.

We took it to the lake after stopping for some gas, drinks, and ice. My boat has a cooler with a drain to drip off the melted ice, and I hadn't re-connected the hose. The hose that was on there previously had split, so I cut off a little piece of old water hose, and threw it in the boat as we were heading out.

In the pre-launch area, I jumped in the boat and started installing the drain hose while everybody else pulled the cover and straps off.

Got the hose on, threw the drinks and a couple of bags of ice in the cooler, and headed to the ramp.

Backed down the ramp, and got the fenders under water. The boat looks like it's riding a little low on the trailer, so I back down a couple more feet, to get it up higher. My wife assures me they're floating.

I remove the safety chain, and winch strap, and give it a push. I can't budge it. She decides to fire the engine, and just back it off. Fires it up, puts it in reverse, and doesn't move. I back down another foot or so. Nothing.

She throws it back in reverse, and gives it some gas, and the boat and trailer just start moving sideways on the slippery moss.

All of a sudden, the wife says "Oh. The rear straps are still on!"

I thought they'd pulled those off while I was installing the hose, but I guess the only straps that got removed were the cover straps.

I pulled it up the ramp (luckily nobody was waiting), and we pulled the straps off, and backed it back down. The boat floated right off.

We got a laugh out of it. We were just glad nobody else was there watching us.

Of course, things only went down hill from there. Ended up stalling out, just outside of the cove, and having to get towed back in...

The rear strap mistake is one we'll only make once though... :D

Re: Telling on myself.

I just posted on the forum a few weeks ago about changing my rear " over the boat" strap which suffered some damage to the rear straps that go from tow hooks to the trailer. Backed on in with the wife holding on to the bow line and I'm hollerin "pull it pull it" as the boat is solidly fastened to the trailer. Moved up, put it in reverse and gassed it. Hit the brakes and the whole rig starts sliding down the ramp.

This was a Saturday morning at a crowded ramp. Guy next to me wanders over and suggests I remove my "forgotten" rear straps.

Good luck with your rig and the new motor. Sounds like she should run pretty good.

If that had happened to me 25 years ago, I would have left the boat at the ramp parking area, grabbed the beverages, and headed to Goshen for a long soak in the hot springs. LOL :D:D

How did you manage that?

Re: Telling on myself.

I did the same thing years ago on a holiday weekend. I didn't try to start the boat but I sure pushed like crazy thinking it was stuck on the trailer. Once I figured out what I did, I really thought of just wading in, taking off the straps, and throwing them to the bottom so no one would see, but the water was just too cold.:D

I once deliberately kept a trailer tied under a boat in order to get it to the island where my friend has a cottage in the Thousand Islands.Everybody was pointing at me and they were dumbfounded when I disconnected the trailer from the car instead of the boat from the trailer. It worked like a dream and we still use that trailer to keep his boat stored on the island in winter.

Reminds me of that Bill Dance moment/blooper when the hitch pin breaks and the trailer was still under the boat :D.

I left my rear straps on when launching by myself. I was at a private boat ramp though thank goodness and nobody else was up (relatives) when I was launching the boat. I didn't back it in to far though thank goodness. I pulled it back up and undone the straps and continued on .

Re: Telling on myself.

Try this one on for size. I had the wife back the trailer ansd our 24ft pontoon down the ramp. I started the engine, disconnected the winch line and started to back her off the trailer (was partially floating already and just needed a nudge). While this is taking place the wifes cell phone rings, she answers it and then for an unknown reason at the time she starts to pull forward off the ramp with the boat half on and half off. The next thing that you know I am sitting on the ramp with the pontoons on the ramp half in and half out. Needless to say I take the keys from now on when we back onto the ramp.

I don't know how we got so lucky. But there were plenty of folks staring as we got towed back in... ;)

Re: Telling on myself.

never happened to me but since I have a whaler I think it would lift the trailer up.
