Telltale Experience

From my "What Now" thread, I got the engine running. So I thought it time to check the water cooling. Borrowed the neighbors muffs and gave it a test. There was water out the center of the prop and a sputtering out two rectangular holes just below the power head in the aft of the engine, but nothing out the telltale. Shut it down after about a min of running. I thought it must be time for a new impeller. Is the sputtering out the rectangular holes normal?
Did a search on impeller and telltale and decided to try using a barrel rather than the muffs. The result was not much different. Nothing out the telltale. While at it I decided to adjust the carbs from the 1 1/2 out from bottom initial setting. Needed to lean down the mixture to get better running, along with increase in rpm and low and behold the telltale started squirting nice warm water. So conclusion is rpm is important in getting water to the top of the engine and the telltale. I still want to change the oil in the lower unit and do the timing, link and sync adjustments.
I've had such a convoluted experience with this engine that I worry that its time to get another curve ball thrown at me, but at least I feel some progress is being made and maybe those salmon will be worth it all. Have a good day. JH

Water started coming out of the telltale because you let it run for more than a minute...

Re: Telltale Experience

I don't know about the minute requirement, but I do know that the flow fluctuated with engine rpm. After the carb adjustment the rpm was sufficient to keep the flow going, when I continued fiddling with the adjustment and had a rpm drop the flow either stopped or dimished. So, is there a thermostat controlling flow thru the telltale? Also is the sputtering of water from the rectangular openings below the spark plugs normal? Thanks JH
