i just recently bought a 84 150hp merc.... and i was wondering if there is a way to check the temp alarm... or to check to see if i even have one...

Like I said on your other thread about the manual.
There should be a little klixon temperature switch clamped to a depression on one of the heads, I believe the starboard one. Follow the wire to a terminal and ground the terminal to the block when the ignition key is on. The alarm should sound. that tests the alarm circuit. The switch itself can be taken off and tested on the stove with a pan of water and an ohmmeter.
Just follow the tan wire off the cylinder head to the plastic connector above the rectifier,turn key to ON and take a jumper wire from a know ground to screw holding tan wire and horn should blow,if not check horn....
