Hi folks, I took my boat out for the first time this year today,17ft Bayliner cuddy cabin 1987 W/85hp Force outboard motor. I had started it yesterday on the muffs with the battery charger and it was hard to start (it always is when its cold). I let it run20min or so, shut it off and when I started it again the starter was kind of slow spinning. I figured the battery need a slow charge overnight.(new battery last Aug). I thought I would put in new plugs, might help starting easier, but before I put in the new plugs I wanted to run some SEAFOAM(deepcreep) through it. I started it let it run at an idle for 10minthe sprayed SEAFOAM in the air intake, just a little at a time. It started smoking and would start to choke out, and I would quite spraying and let it run. Did this for about 1/2 hr not a full can of spray. It had quite smoking so bad then but still did a little and I left it until morning, charged the battery overnight and it was still turning over slow in the morning, I started it on the charger, it fired right up still smoking a little but running fine. idled a little bit fast,I let it run 15min then changed the plugs. Launched the boat it started right up still a little fast on the idle not much and ran fine. It was about 4 mph slower than usual, but I had 1 extra person than usual and he weighed 275 or more.
It was spitting water out the exhaust and peeing out the side, everything was normal. We ran about 4-5 miles in some narrow waterways that changed depth a lot and went through some places in 2 ft of water at about27-30 mph, we never felt like we bottomed out or the motor ever hit anything all was ok. Then all of a sudden the TEMP ALARM goes of(the first time ever), I shut the boat off and thought I had sucked it full of mud,it wasn't squirting any more. While we waited for it to cool off we tilted the motor up part way and flushed water into the pickup vent with the paddle and we flushed a small amount of mud out but not enough to plug it up( in my opinion) I've had a lot more in there other times when getting caught at low tide at the ramp and buried it in the mud. So after awhile it cooled off we paddle to where we new there as enough water not to suck mud and it ftred right up. It seamed to be running normal no missing popping or anything but it wasn't squirting water out the side, it was spitting out the exhaust. I had no choice but to head to the ramp as there want any boat traffic going to be coming by to help us, started to the ramp at about 1/2 throttle it was running smooth, kept watching for it to start squirting but it didn't. It seamed to be running fine so upped it to 3/4 throttle figuring at worst if it got hot the alarm would go off again. We made it to the ramp with no problem, no weird noises or knocks from the motor.Put it on the trailer and took it over to flush it out and it was all clean no more mud came out. And I've had mud coming out the exhaust the pick up vent and the center of the prop before, but still not squirting out the side. I took the tattle tale apart when I got home and it was clean in there.
So now I'm thinking I didn't suck up enough mud to plug it up at all. But maybe with the SEAFOAM in it it was running to lean and made it overheat? Do you think that's possible or can you think of something else that maybe the problem!!!

Hey THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR READING ALL THIS
ANY IDEA'S WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Re: Temp. Alarm and decarbonizing

Sounds like more mud than you think. If the pee line is clear and not pumping then maybe the impeller got too much mud in it.
You ever check what's really in the mud?Sticks, stones, bones, rocks, sand etc.
It has a way of ruining the impeller and clogging the exhaust ports.
Profile?? Where you AT??
Start with a compression/spark test. Then change the impeller.Flush the motor while the lower is off.Take the thermo out so it flushes the whole motor.Won't hurt to run it for a while with the lower off as long as you have water going through.
Seafoam won't do that.
Slow starter.Maybe the brushes are going bad or the starter has dirt in the bottom(old brushes).
Rebuild, buy new,Load test the battery.Low comp will cause slow starting.J

Re: Temp. Alarm and decarbonizing

well I flushed the motor from top to bottom, bottom to top and the blew air through it everywhere. I looked everywhere I could see with fiber optic light and saw nothing. put the muffs on it Monday after Jury Duty and it spun like a to fired right up started peeing out the side spitting out the exhaust, running fine . All the water is running clear, never did see anything odd or anymore mud come out. It all seems good. I'll put it in the water later this week after I get the Temp. gauge sending unit I ordered. Hopefully dodged a bullet. I'd rather be lucky than good anytime!!!!
