Rooster, The old inline mercs don't have thermostats, so water temp is not a good way to tell if they are overheating. We use water pressure gauges for these. The OMC products have had overheat alarms or lights for a long time. Newer ('85+) mercs have temp alarms as well. If your motor has a thermostat, and you have a unused threaded plug on the cylinder head, you may install a temp or pressure gauge or a temp alarm. The temp alarms ground out when a high temp is reached. You therefore supply +12V to one connector on the buzzer, and connect the other side to the temp alarm sender. when the motor overheats, the circuit is completed and the buzzer sounds.
