Temp gauge not working and stuck in Quickstart.

It started when I flushed my engine after the last time out. I got home and flushed the engine as usual. Since it was hot from running on the ocean.... it ran fine, but I noticed my temp gauge was not registering. Today I started the engine cold and waited. My gauge didn't go up. The engine was stuck in quickstart mode. The engine was warming up cause I could touch the heads and they were a bit uncomfortable, but I could still keep my hand on them for a couple of seconds. NOthing as far as temperature was moving. I stopped the engine and ohmed out both temperature sensors. They were both open. I connected them back up and started the engine. All of a sudden ,with in a minute, the engine came out of quick mode and rev'd down to 800 rpm. THe temp. gauge was still at zero through. Could the temp gauge, if it's bad, be affecting the circuit and not letting the engine come out of quickmode?
And what is the best way to check the temp. sensors? Do they(both) short out when the engine reaches the correct operating temp?

What motor?

We'll assume a V4 or V6 or V8 because you say "senders". If you're checking the senders in the heads, those are for the hot horn (or related systems depending on what motor you have). The sender for the gauge is different than those.

Ah Geez...... Sorry about that. It's been a while since I posted and the new board software removed my sig.

It's a Johnson 2001 150V 60 degree block.

Ok, great motor. The senders in the head from the factory operate the overheat warnings only. The sender for the temp gauge will be screwed into one of the heads and go directly to the gauge. The wires from the other senders will go into the harness.

Make sure the t-stats are working properly. Have the heads been off lately for a service or any other reason?

No Sir they have not. Ok..there appears to be a brass sensor screwed into the left side head when looking from the back and only has a single wire connected to it. So I would assume that is the temperature sensor? And if it is that....then either that or the gauge is defective?

I did a search on BRP and it doesn't list the sensor with the engine components. I did find a 0174675 water temperature kit. BRP says it's for 2000 and 2002 instruments. Is this the one that my engine uses? My boat is 2001.
