I have a 1992 cobra 5.0 HO did a full day of tubing when finished I put the tube on the ski hook and let it drag partly in the water, I drove for about a half mile and noticed temp gauge had pegged out. I immiediatley turned engine off. I then let motor cool down and put the tube on sundeck and started motor back up temp gauge was going back down to normal 170. What could have caused this? Do you think I might have hurt the engine in that short of time.

You may have picked up a plastic bag on the drive and it covered the water intake ports on the drive. As to the damage, who knows. Have you checked for water in the oil? (Milky) does the engine sould ok when running?

Might want to inspect that impeller.

Randy, I had an impeller on my Alpha that was damaged on the bottom only. The motor cooled fine at anything over idle, but overheated at idle.

Don, that was the second thing I did was jump in the water and check out the water intake ports all clear. I then check the oil dipstick and there wasn't any milk. It ran fine after it cooled back down. I will probably change the impeller just to make sure, it is two seasons old.

As soon as you shut off the engine, the bag would have fallen off. No more suction to hold it on. Any movement of the boat would have helped hide a bag or seaweed or whatever it was.
