I have a 86 90hp Johnson v4. Is there anyway to put a water temp gauge on this motor?

Re: temp gauge

They are actually engine temperature gauges, but yes. There are senders that clamp under the cylinder head bolt and hold the thermometer against the head. You can get them from your J/E dealer or from aftermarket suppliers. I use an OMC one on my 115. The sender has to match the gauge, so buy it as a kit if possible.

I know that they sell the Teleflex ones here on Iboat and I bounced around for a minute trying to find the kit. I gave up, but look around, or maybe someone more patient will find it for you.

Someone had a picture of the sender on another thread. Take a look: Click and See Second photo

Re: temp gauge

There are two types of temp gauges. The one described in the previous post is a cylinder head temp gauge. It measures the temp of the metal. Water temp gauges screw into the water jacket and monitor water temperature. Either type works, but the temperatures they record should not be confused.

Thought I had made that clear enough, if not, please accept my apologies.

If someone can provide information that will assist in giving you a gauge that actually measures the water temperature, I will be impressed and so should you.

Golly Ezeke -- no apologies necessary and I certainly didn't mean to contradict anything you posted. I thought I'd add a bit of clarification as not everyone understands this stuff. Water temp senders are variable resistors that present about 30 - 40 ohms of resistance at 220 degrees and about 240 ohms at 60 degrees. Senders need to match the gauge but they do indeed measure water temperature. The down side of a water temp gauge is if the water pump is not pumping, there is no water and hence no temp reading or a very incorrect one. Some gauges are calibrated in degrees while newer ones are calibrated Cold-Hot. Cylinder head temp senders are thermocouples. Either type is best used in conjunction with a water pressure gauge. Failure to pay attention to either one or to understand whats happening when readings change can be costly.

Maybe I misunderstood, but here's several of them:

teleflexmarine.com/cgi-bin/frameset2.cgi?site=gauges&type=us&link2=1050
