Re: temp gauge?

Water pressure gauges are more common and helpful in such a motor.

If you do go with a temp gauge the best way is to epoxy a sensor directly to the head but I'm sure someone else will chime in here.

You cannot use any temp gauge intended for an auto or truck. They are calibrated differently because an outboard runs cooler. Teleflex and Faria both make outboard temp gauges. These are electric gauges and you must get a temp sender that matches the gauge.

Re: temp gauge?

I would rather have a temperature gauge than a pressure gauge. The temperature gauge gives the operator a reference point that, over time, becomes a beacon. The pressure gauge is good, but tells you nothing about the cooling circuit. In other words, you could have a magnificent water pump with nothing circulating through the engine.

Lots of different opinions . . . . I would prefer to have both, if possible.

Re: temp gauge?

Agreed. I do have both and it is relatively easy to do.

You tap into the tell-tale hose for the water pressure, following the clear instructions in the OMC/BRP water pressure kit or the Teleflex kit. You don't need electrical for this unless you want the light.

And, likewise, use the included Z strap on the cylinder head for the water temperature kit from either source. The sender is grounded to the engine and the gauge requires a positive feed off the ignition switch. If you want the light you need an additional ground wire.

Teleflex has the instructions on-line, but the OMC/BRP instructions are very much the same.

I think i might do both so are they hard to do or should i take it to a marine tech? I am mechanically inclined I work on cars I know there is differences but its easier if you know what your doing. but is it difficult or what and where @ can i find the temp and pressure gauge?
