temp gauge

G'day everyone,

I have a question regarding temperature gauges. Earlier this year I purchased a Swiftcraft 17" halfcab fishing boat as a project. It came with a 1977 70hp Evinrude outboard. The motor has good comp and has had new water pump fitted, new head gasket, carbs kitted and been fully serviced and I am just about ready to go fishing.

Through a search here and from what the mechanic that serviced my motor said the only way to tell if the engine is overheating is a buzzer in the controller. How do you test the buzzer and is it possible to hook up a car temp gauge to the outboard.

cheers

Re: temp gauge

Look at the top of the head by the thermostat cover, there should be a tan wire with a slip on rubber cover. Slide cover back, disconnect wire, turn key to on, touch harness end of wire to block (ground it ) and the overheat horn should sound off. They do make temp guage kits, but personally I think installing a tell-tale would be a better option.

G'day Mate.
You've got an Ex Pome here.
Look for the temp sensor on the head. Disconnect it at the head connection and ground the wire end that goes to the electronic box. The buzzer should sound off.
You can find a bolt-on sensor and a gauge on Ebay.
You can buy an infrared hand held gauge to check the head temp for little money. Temp should show around 145F.

Re: temp gauge

A tell-tale is visable stream of water that shoots out of the cowling, lets you see if the water pump is pumping. Since the tell-tale only monitors the pump pressure the engine can still over heat if you have a thermostat or some other malfunction in the block.

Thanks for that, there are 2 holes about 3/4 the way up the leg that water comes out of whilst its running. Is that the tell tale? I wouldn't call it shooting tho, more of a fast dribble.

Re: temp gauge

No. The tell-tale will be about 1/8" stream of water coming out of the lower engine cowling. Your engine does not have a tell-tale, but you could install one.

Re: temp gauge

The current temp sender on your engine is actually an on/off switch. It goes to ground (turns the horn on) at around 212 degrees. Turns the horn off when the head temp gets back down to around 175 degrees. Not suitable to drive a temp gauge. You would need to buy a different sender to drive any temp gauge. I like the water pressure gauges, but since you do not have the telltale feature on your engine, you would have to plumb it into the block or head yourself.
